How to choose the right solar power inverter- On-grid/ Off-grid/ Hybrid ?

The electric current generate from solar panels is DC current. But our home/commercial loads need AC current. So we need to use a tool to help us convert the DC current into AC current. Thats inverter.

 

However, there are various types of inverters on the market, many customers are often confused: which type of inverters they should choose?

Hot-selling solar inverters in solar market: On-grid inverter/ Off-grid inverter/ Hybrid inverter

 

1. On-grid inverter: like its name, can integrate solar power into the national grid, has no battery storage.

Ø Working principle: Solar panels generate electricity, then sent through the inverter to load and national grid. Since it doesnt connect to batteries, so we cant use it in the evening or power failure day.

Ø Advantage

Save your cost: compare with off-grid and hybrid inverter, the unit price of on-grid inverter is cheaper. And on-grid solar system without battery, total cost will be lower;

Get another profit: For example, a 50kW on-grid solar system can produce around 200kWh of electricity power per day in the Americas.

Solution A: Use 200kWh for yourself, profit = 200kWh * local electricity prices

Solution B: 100kWh for use, 100kWh for sell, profit = 100kWh * local electricity prices + 100kWh * local electricity selling price+ 100kWh * electricity bill subsidy

Solution C: Sell all of 200kWh, profit = 200kWh * local electricity selling price+ 200kWh * electricity bill subsidy

Ø Suggest applicable crowd: Area with stable grid; No need to store electricity; Low budget (Mainly suitable for large power stations, less for residence)

1. Off-grid inverter: It can operate independently of the national grid, store electricity with batteries, provide 24/7 power for users without    grid coverage or who need energy independence.

Ø Working principle: Solar panels generate electricity, then sent through the inverter to load. Extra power is stored in batteries and can’t be sold to the national grid.

Ø Advantage

Various ways to generate electricity: From national grid, solar panels and diesel generators. Even youre in a remote areas or places with unstable power grids or long-term power failure areas, off-grid systems still can provide you a greater security.

Battery storage: If no sunshine and power outage, your battery can be the emergency power supply and will automatically release electricity.

For example, a 10kW off-grid solar system can produce around 50kWh of electricity power per day in Africa area. If we use 30kWh lithium batteries, it can supply 3 hours for 10kW home load at night.

Ø Suggest applicable crowd: Remote areas/ places with unstable power grids/ long-term power failure areas; People no need to sell extra power.(Mainly suitable for residence, less small factory)

Ø Hot-selling models: 3kW, 5kW, 10kW, 12kW (Up to 6 units can be connected in parallel to reach 72kW)

1. Hybrid inverter: Combination of on-grid and off-grid inverter, with battery, can sell or not sell extra power.

Ø Working principle: Solar panels generate electricity, then sent through the inverter to load, batteries and national grid.

Satisfies both buying and selling electricity at the same time, and extra power stored in batteries.

Ø Advantage

High flexibility: Grid power and battery storage can be used simultaneously to adapt to a variety of power usage scenarios.

Power is still available during power outages: The energy storage system provides backup power during power outages.

Save electricity bills: Excess electricity can be stored or fed back to the grid.

Ø Suggest applicable crowd: Suitable for areas with occasional power outages but generally stable grid power supply; People want backup power supply; People need to sell extra power.( Mainly suitable for residence, medium and large factories)

Ø Hot-selling models: 8kW 10kW 12kW 20kW 50kW 100kW...

Additional instruction:

If the load is some equipment that requires large voltage fluctuations or requires 24-hour uninterrupted power supply, then the hybrid inverter can provide better voltage quality and reliability because it can automatically adjust the output voltage and frequency according to the changes in the load, and act as a balance between the grid and the battery.

If the load is some equipment with small voltage fluctuation requirements, then an off-grid inverter can also meet the needs as long as there is sufficient power generation and batteries.
